About the event

Silent Sky is the poignant tale of a woman’s dedication to the stars and the humanity that makes life under them beautiful and timeless. Henrietta Leavitt, an unsung pioneer astronomer, made a discovery in 1912 that became a cornerstone of modern astronomical science. While working at the Harvard Observatory, Henrietta, and her fellow “women computers” (whose logging of the brightness of stars more resembled book-keeping than research) transformed the study of astronomy and our concept of the cosmos. Her discovery of 2,400 new variable stars and her breakthrough calculations about their fluctuating brightness enabled astronomers, including Hubble, to map the Milky Way and beyond.
